Do Nothing and Do It Well is a feature documentary that reveals the neglected true story of the militant Chinese workers who rocked the streets of Melbourne at the turn of the 20th Century. Behind a raging soundtrack of furious Cantonese punk and hip-hop, the film weaves together newspaper clippings, the film-maker’s family history and a fictionalised dead narrator, to present a sprawling new portrait of Melbourne. Addressing ongoing questions of race, class and the Australian labour movement, Do Nothing and Do It Well plants a flag of defiance and struggle in the streets you thought you knew.

RINGER is a three channel HD video projection installation 13:20 minutes, looped, with 9.1 channel audio. First exhibited in 2024 at Buxton Contemporary gallery in Melbourne, Australia.

Working across film, performance and sculpture, Cate Consandine’s practice explores the physical expression of psychological and emotional states, centring on the relationship between bodies and their contingent registers. Filmed in the Martyn Myer Arena at the Victorian College of the Arts, RINGER is an embodied choreography of moving image, action sequencing and sound. The work meditates upon the peripheral dimensions of the female gaze, capturing the alertness of its acute sense, psyche, and immersive power. The work invites the viewer to grasp at the forces and encounters that reach toward the outer limits of the visual field. The circular filmic medium is the arena in which Consandine re-imagines the world of roller derby as a tensile site of violence between players.
